In this series of seminars, Prof. Arnold Alamon will reveal the history and current issues that the Lumad, or non-Islamized indigenous peoples on Mindanao Island, southern Philippines face. The Lumad and the Moro (Islamized indigenous peoples) are both indigenous peoples of the southern Philippines. However, with the influx of Christian settlers from Luzon and Visayas region, they have been minoritized in their own ancestral domains. The logging, mining, and agricultural industries have especially affected and impoverished the Lumad. They are more vulnerable than the Moro, with the latter establishing armed liberation fronts.

How have the Lumad face these problems and will they find a pathway towards peace and development? The author of the two books, Wars of Extinction: Discrimination and the Lumad Struggle in Mindanao (Rural Missionaries of the Philippines-Northern Mindanao Sub-Region, 2017) and The Nation in Our Hearts: Essays on Mindanao (University of the Philippines Press, 2017), Prof. Alamon will discuss these issues.

本連続セミナーでは、ミンダナオ国立イリガン工科大学からアーノルド・アラモン氏を招き、フィリピン南部ミンダナオ島の先住民がおかれている現状と課題について理解を深める。本セミナーは、なかでも同島の非イスラム教徒の先住民に焦点をあてる。彼らは、キリスト教徒の移民とその子孫が大多数となったミンダナオ島において社会的、経済的に周辺化され、武装集団を擁するイスラム教徒に対しては弱い立場におかれてきた。彼らの先祖伝来の領域は主に山間部に位置するが、森林伐採、鉱物資源、商品作物の開発がおよぶと、自給的基盤が切り崩され、深刻な貧困問題に直面することになった。経済的周辺化からの解放をめざして一部は共産ゲリラとの接点をもつようになり、フィリピン政府の警戒の対象となっている。

こうした課題に彼らはどのように立ち向かおうとしているのだろうか。二つの著書 Wars of Extinction: Discrimination and the Lumad Struggle in Mindanao (Rural Missionaries of the Philippines-Northern Mindanao Sub-Region, 2017)と The Nation in Our Hearts: Essays on Mindanao (University of the Philippines Press, 2017)を記したアラモン氏に話題提供をしていただき、議論を行う。
